Serious Violence - YouTubeYouTubeSun, Oct 19 2014 16:28:01A while back, I decided to record my play-through of the Serious Violence series of mods, which consists of two mods for Serious Sam Classic: The Second Encounter. The first half involves importing and converting levels from Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter to the Serious Engine 1.07 format. The interesting thing about this mod is that it had gained a little bit of infamy among the western fan community Seriously! Simply due to its nature as a mod that redistributed levels from the base game. As such, it had gained an element of underground desirability, and many people went out of their way to seek this mod out. Fortunately, the original website for the mod is still up, and you can still check it out for yourself.Serious Violence - The First EncounterIncrease enemy count.
(Same as original Serious difficulty in Tourist.)DtiSerious Violence - The Second EncounterIncrease enemy count. (Same as original Serious difficulty in Tourist.)DtiSo what is this mod about? Well, I'd have to say that it is one of the best implementations of a family of mods that are unique to old-school arena-style shooters. It takes the idea of a lone soldier, armed to the teeth, and ready to take on an endless horde of enemies, to its eventual extreme conclusion. There are other maps and mods for the Serious Sam franchise as well as other games like Doom that follow a similar pattern.
However, it is my opinion that this mod did it the best of the lot so far. To understand why this is so, we need to look at other examples first. The first of which is the concept of a 'Slaughter Map' for Doom.Definition of 'slaughter map'?
- Doomworld ForumsI'm new to the genre, but I think I have a pretty good understanding of them. Slaughter maps represent a shift in focus for the player, less about the resource-management of ammo (since ample is usually supplied) and more toward commanding a large amount of space that is constantly threatened by burgeoning enemies; usually in hordes.DoomworldHell Revealed - The Doom Wikia - Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3, and moreHell Revealed is a 32-level megawad for Doom II. It is possibly the best known example of an.doom.wikia.comWhat a slaughter map essentially is is a level or set of levels that are designed with a 4-digit monster count in mind, to create a massive-scale fight that is extremely dangerous for the players, and to force them to make use of advanced mechanics in order to survive. Such mechanics include monster infighting, rocket-boosting, 50ยบ strafe-running and Archvile-jumping.
While these maps are designed with vanilla Doom gameplay in mind and specifically to challenge expert players, there has been weapon and gameplay mods that have been made to make the experience more accessible to more casual players. Noteable maps like Hell Revealed, Deus Vult, Slaughterfest 2012, Drown in Blood, Chillax and Sunder often crop up in slaughter map discussions. Mods like eWeps and Russian Overkill also come to mind. While slaughter maps are good in their own right, and serves as a way for the most expert Doom players to feel challenged, accessibility is a big issue. The fact that there are mods made to make the experience more palatable for a more general audience speaks a lot about its general inaccessibility. Personally, the only slaughter map pack I can stomach is Deus Vult II, and I am not a fan of how the weapon sprites in Russian Overkill are cut off at the sides when playing on a widescreen resolution.
Fast-forward to the era of Serious Sam Classic modding. We have begun to see the evolution of this style of game play in the form of mods that are specialized in mutating the game to spawn more enemies than it should, and giving players a much more powerful arsenal, as well as extra running speed and maybe resilience. The first that most western Serious Sam fans would recognize would be the Parse Error/Serious InSamnity! These family of mods are noteable for using clever scripting and clever use of entity replacers to generate a massive swarm of enemies, as well as extend the customization options of the game to include things like enemy multipliers, weapon damage multipliers, player damage scaling, player running speed etc.

The advantage of this approach is pretty obvious, it is supposedly compatible with all community-created maps and map-sets that have been made for the game. However, unfortunately, in the case of Serious Sam Classic, we don't see the emergence of any new enemy types, and in the case of InSamnity! 2, the Serious Engine 2 SDK is limited to request-only, leaving the options limited as to how far one could feasably take the modding of weapons and enemies. So far, the author (DwK aka Nathan Brown) had made mods in this vein for Serious Sam Classic and Serious Sam 2, with a similar, but half-hearted effort put towards making a similar mod for Doom 3.
The second set of mods with this style of game-play is Serious Violence. This is technically two separate mods, with Serious Violence: The First Encounter making use of the Egypt levels from Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter, and Serious Violence: The Second Encounter making use of the three episodes taking place in Central America, Persia and Medieval Poland in Serious Sam Classic: The Second Encounter. The author, Akira Ishikawa, took a very different approach compared to the Parse Error/InsSamnity! Series in creating an intensified combat experience.
Instead of using scripting to generate slaughter maps out of regular maps, he decided instead to take the original maps from the game, and edit them manually to include extra fights and enemies. Not only that, but he also added extra game-play elements like enemy infighting, extra power-ups, secondary firing modes and a dual-wielding system for the weapons. The advantage of manually reconfiguring the fight sequences is that it gives the author greater control of the flow of the combat, and it gave him a lot more room to tweak the balance between player firepower and enemy threat levels. This approach makes sense when you consider the addition of new enemy variations and new power-ups; Had he went for the scripted replacers approach, it would lead to a lot of potential spots where the balance can be utterly broken, both towards the insultingly easy and unreasonably difficult end. There is also a point to be made about the maps having certain spots where it would be too cramped to multiply the enemy count to the same measure as the rest of the areas. The disadvantage of this approach is that any community made custom map or map pack will have to be manually converted to work with the mod and play well with it, this can be a problem for users not familliar with the Serious Editor 1 tool.
